A drought-tolerant Menlo Park front garden designed by Val's Landscaping, featuring native grasses, salvias, and a decomposed granite path.
Project № 217 Menlo Park · 2024

A small studio that treats every yard like a long conversation.

Val's Landscaping began in 2009 with a single truck, a borrowed rototiller, and a stubborn belief that a Peninsula garden should look like it belongs here — not like it was imported from a wetter climate two thousand miles east. We design, build, and maintain outdoor spaces for homeowners who plan to stay.

Most of our work sits within a fifteen-minute drive of downtown Menlo Park. That matters: we know which lots drain slowly after a February storm, which slopes face the wrong way for afternoon sun, and which neighborhoods welcome a front yard full of ceanothus and coyote mint instead of a clipped lawn.

We are a crew of seven — designers, horticulturists, and masons — and we keep our roster intentionally small. Every project gets the same lead designer from first sketch to final walkthrough, usually a year later.

Eight ways we work a yard, priced honestly.

Every property is different, so these are starting points — real numbers from real invoices over the last twelve months, not marketing ranges. Final quotes are fixed, not estimates, before any shovel goes in the ground.

Prices reflect typical Menlo Park and Atherton jobs over the last year. We'll send a fixed quote within five business days of a site visit — no surprises on the final invoice, ever.

From first walk to final walkthrough, in four honest phases.

No mystery, no milestone surprises. Here's exactly how a Val's project moves from the day you call to the day we hand over the keys to your new garden.

  1. PHASE 01

    Site Visit & Listening

We walk the property together for about ninety minutes. You tell us how you actually use the yard — the dog, the teenagers, the dinner parties, the spot where nothing ever grows. We take measurements, soil samples, and a hundred photos. No charge.

  2. PHASE 02

    Design & Fixed Quote

Within two weeks you receive concept boards, a planting plan, a hardscape layout, and a fixed-price quote — not an estimate. Two revision rounds are included. If you don't love it, you walk away owing nothing for the design.

  3. PHASE 03

    Build & Plant

Our crew — not subcontractors, with one exception for large trees — executes the build. Hardscape first, irrigation second, planting last. Typical residential projects run three to six weeks depending on scope and weather.

  4. PHASE 04

    Walkthrough & Warranty

We walk every line, every plant, every valve together. Then we hand you a one-year warranty on plants and a three-year warranty on hardscape. Most clients also sign on for monthly maintenance so the garden actually grows into itself.
