A village pub,
worth the walk
— home of the
Hampshire roast.

A 16th-century inn on the outskirts of Winchester, where the welcome is warm, the wine list is honest, and the kitchen is led by Head Chef Mark Young — cooking modern British food with the seasons and the soil in mind.

Our Story

Five centuries of good company, kept honest.

For generations, The Chestnut Horse has stood at the heart of the idyllic village of Easton — a meeting place for locals, a refuge for walkers, a setting for the kind of long lunches that turn into longer evenings.

Following an extensive refurbishment, the pub, outdoor terrace, village shop and rooms now continue that tradition. The character of the historic building has been carefully preserved; only the comforts have been brought up to date.

Today, under Head Chef Mark Young, the kitchen turns out a modern British menu built on simple, classic, seasonal dishes — small plates, pub classics, sharing boards, and signature plates that change as the Hampshire countryside does.

Garden · Terrace · Welcome

The garden, the dog, and the long way home.

To the rear of the pub, a decked terrace and garden look out over the original water meadows of Easton — the very same meadows that put the "water" in the Itchen Navigation just beyond our hedge.

Walkers, boots, muddy paws and well-behaved humans are all warmly welcomed. We're a dog-friendly haven — the kind where the dog gets a bowl and a biscuit before you've even ordered.

Outdoor Terrace

Heated, decked, lit by festoon.

Dog Friendly

Bowls, biscuits, beds in the bar.

Village Shop & Deli

Breakfast, coffee, local provisions.

Walks from the Door

The Itchen Way and South Downs nearby.

Stay the Night

Seven charming pub rooms.

Why rush home? Upstairs, a handful of recently refurbished rooms keep the character of the old inn — thick walls, wonky floors, very good beds — and add the modern comforts that weren't around in the 1500s.
