Provisions for the
golden hour.

A small market on the corner of York and Avenue 56, stocked each morning with produce from regional farms, small-batch pantry goods, and ready-to-heat suppers built for the way Highland Park actually eats.

SUNSET FOODS — provisions since the very first dusk —

We opened on a Tuesday in October with twelve crates of apples, a borrowed refrigerator, and a single promise: good food, fairly priced, on the table by sundown. Six years on, the apples are still here — and so are we.

Our Story

A corner store that refused to be ordinary.

Sunset Foods began the way most good things in Highland Park do — over a long conversation and a slightly too-ambitious lease. Mara and Theo Reyes took over a tired bodega on York Boulevard in 2019, painted the walls the colour of late-October light, and started filling the shelves with the food they actually wanted to feed their own kids.

Today the shop runs on the same simple idea. We buy direct from twelve family farms across the Arroyo and Verde valleys, bake bread before sunrise, and keep a rotating cast of ready-to-heat suppers for the nights when cooking feels like too much. No loyalty card, no app, no algorithm — just a door that opens at seven and a counter where somebody remembers your name.

Why Sunset

Four reasons folks keep coming back.

01 —

Sourced within 90 miles

Twelve partner farms, all within a short drive of Highland Park. Produce lands on the shelf the morning after it's picked — sometimes the same morning.

02 —

Fair prices, kept fair

No surge pricing, no markups on staples, no membership tier. Bread is still seven dollars, and it has been since 2022. That's a promise, not a promo.

03 —

Made by hand, daily

Bread at five, suppers by nine, preserves when the fruit is ripe. The kitchen runs six days a week and never freezes a thing it didn't freeze on purpose.

04 —

Highland Park, through and through

We sponsor the Figueroa street fair, host the autumn canning swap, and employ seven neighbours. The shop belongs to the block as much as to us.
