Three ensuite rooms behind a wisteria-clad brick façade, breakfasts slow-cooked on the Aga, and a quarter-acre of English garden to lose yourself in. Quietly exceptional — and rated 9.6/10 by guests who came as strangers and left as friends.
Tucked down Newbury Lane in the chalk-stream village of Penton Mewsey, Garden Cottage has been a private home, a smallholding, and — for the past decade — one of Test Valley's most quietly loved bed & breakfasts.
Brick floors worn smooth by two centuries of footsteps. Low beamed ceilings. A Rayburn that has not gone cold since 1996. The garden rolls out in every direction: foxgloves and rambling roses in June, apples and quince by September, a snowdrop row that opens every February along the south wall.
It is the sort of place people come back to — for the walk to the Pub on the Green, for the silence at night, for the eggs from next door's hens.
"You wake to blackbird song, the smell of bread, and the kind of quiet you forgot existed in England."— A guest, June 2025
All rooms are ensuite, freshly redecorated in 2024, and furnished with Hypnos beds, Egyptian cotton linen, and tea-making trays stocked with local Hampshire blends.
Ground-floor room opening directly onto the rose garden. King bed, original brick floor, a deep armchair by the window.
First-floor room under the eaves, with exposed oak beams and a roll-top bath in the ensuite. Our most-photographed room.
Our largest room — a super-king with a small private sitting area. Looks east over the orchard and the old flint wall.
Breakfast is served at one long oak table in the garden room. Bread is baked the night before. Eggs come from Reg's hens, three doors down. Sausages and bacon are cured at the Kimbridge estate, seven miles south. Marmalade is made each January in our own kitchen from the garden's Seville oranges.
Vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free plates are always on the table — just mention it when you book.
"Genuinely the most peaceful three nights we have had in years. Margaret left fresh flowers in the room and the breakfast was extraordinary. We are already planning to come back for the snowdrops."
"The location is unbeatable — a real village, a real pub ten minutes' walk away, and yet Andover station is a ten-minute drive. Perfect balance. The cottage itself is gorgeous and smelled of bread."
"Stayed in the Rose Room. The bath, the beams, the birdsong, the eggs. A masterclass in how to run a B&B without ever making you feel like a guest. We did not want to leave."
Penton Mewsey sits four miles west of Andover, surrounded by the chalk downs and the rivers Test and Anton. London Waterloo is 65 minutes by train from Andover. Stonehenge is half an hour by car. Salisbury, Winchester and the New Forest are all within forty minutes.
The Pub on the Green — a thatched 17th-century local serving good food — is a four-minute walk across the meadow.
The simplest way to book is to telephone Margaret directly. She keeps the diary by the Aga and prefers a real conversation to a booking form. Same-day enquiries welcome.
