Medicine that listens before it prescribes.
Same-week new patient visits
Family Medicine, Integrative & Behavioral Health appointments with Dr. Mathis and the UTMB faculty team.
A family medicine practice rooted in Galveston.
Est. on the islandDr. Samuel Mathis serves as Assistant Professor and Vice Chair of Clinical Operations for the Department of Family Medicine & Community Health at UTMB Health — and as Director of the Integrative & Behavioral Medicine Fellowship.
His practice is built on a simple conviction: the best medicine is made in conversation, not in a hurry. Patients are heard first, examined second, and treated as whole people — not as a collection of separate complaints.
Working alongside the UTMB Family Medicine faculty — including department chair Dr. Kendall M. Campbell and vice chair for research Dr. Brittany L. Smalls — Dr. Mathis brings together conventional primary care, integrative therapies, and behavioral health under a single, coordinated plan.
From preventive wellness visits to complex chronic disease management, the clinic serves families across Galveston Island and the wider Texas Gulf Coast community.

How a visit actually works.
No surprises
Whole-person care, not symptom-only care.
Every visit begins with listening. Before any test is ordered or prescription written, Dr. Mathis and the care team take time to understand the full picture — your history, your goals, and the everyday realities that shape your health.
From that foundation, treatment plans are built collaboratively, drawing on conventional medicine, behavioral health, and integrative therapies where the evidence supports them.
A department, not a soloist.
