Welcome to the Cottage

An old house, a quiet garden, and the city at your doorstep.

Cathedral Cottage sits 200 metres from Winchester Cathedral, on a lane that bends down towards the river and the water meadows. From the front step you can be at the High Street, the theatre, the cinema, the Guildhall or the Christmas Market in less time than it takes to choose where to have dinner.

The cottage itself is small and that, we think, is the point of it. Two rooms only. A garden at the back. A grape-covered loggia where — in the long summer months — breakfast arrives on linen, with the birds for accompaniment.

We are at the start of the loveliest walk in Winchester: down through the water meadows to St Cross, where Keats was inspired to write To Autumn. The South Downs Way begins a few minutes from our front door.

Served in the dining room, in your room, or — best of all — under the grape-vine loggia.

Breakfast is included, naturally. You may take it in our dining room, brought to your room on a tray, or, in the summer months, carried out under the grape-covered loggia at the bottom of the garden, where it tastes, we always think, of the holidays you remember from being ten.

Choose a full English — the proper sort, with locally sourced sausages and eggs from a farm outside Alresford — or a continental breakfast of breads, pastries, fruit and good strong coffee.
